Association for the Visually Impaired is seeking an Assistive Technology Instructor, 5 - 10 hours per week, to assist adults who are blind and visually impaired in achieving their highest level of function in performing tasks of daily living, education, and employment through development of assistive technology skills.
DUTIES &
Responsibilities:
Assess base level of ability to use adaptive technology such as computers, refreshable braille devices, magnification and enhancement software, screen readers, various communication and portable devices, various relay devices and software, and other related software applications Plan lessons and provide skills training, in person, group, or virtually, in content areas of Adaptive Technology curriculum based on the findings of the assessment and as determined by consumers' personal needs and preferences, employing appropriate techniques, materials and communication preferences Record progress and submits scheduled written reports and individualized training plans on a timely basis Make equipment recommendations (hardware and software) based on assessment of participants' skills and potential
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience in the assistive technology space (4 years).
A valid NY State Driver's License or a reliable transportation source to travel locally for appointments.
Empowering individuals in a creative, and flexible approach to establish confidence with technology.
Desired Skills:
Must have a working knowledge of assistive technology:
JAWS screen reader, Windows, Narrator, and Voiceover.
Windows native accessibility, Mac native accessibility.
Working knowledge of iOS & iOS accessibility functions and how to customize to meet the individual needs of our clients.
Proficiency with Android accessibility.
Working knowledge of best practices for using and navigating Operating Systems.
Must have familiarity with helpful assistive technology applications for Mobile devices.
Working knowledge of best practices for navigating websites with multiple screen readers.
Familiarity with optical character recognition solutions, apps and stand-alone products.
Strong communication written, verbal skills needed; flexible teaching style preferred.
The ability to break down instructions into smaller steps as needed, e.

Experience teaching the visually impaired, strongly preferred.
